It's true. A study of the Wikipedia article on the line of succession to the British throne reveals that it would take the deaths of only 314 people to make Ian Liddell-Grainger, the Tory MP for Bridgwater, our King.It is not so surprising: he is a great great great grandson of Queen Victoria.
Another interesting point from the list is that the Duke of Edinburgh ranks at no. 476 in his own right. Given the interbreeding among Europe's royal families, I am surprised he is not higher.
What is really striking, though, is the number of minor German princelings in the list. As Mick Hartley, who put me on to the Wikipedia article, says:
A sobering thought: 172 unfortunate accidents (in the manner of Kind Hearts and Coronets), and we'll have the son of the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg on the throne.
