Bernard Manning guarded Rudolf Hess in Spandau Prison after the end of World War II.

As middle age approaches, and thoughts of hanging and flogging the people who have mugged your neighbours and friends cross my mind with increased frequency, perhaps the last touchstone belief which convinces me that I might still be a liberal is the conviction that not even convicted Nazi war criminals deserve the cruel and unusual punishment of being forced to listen to Bernard Manning.
