Six of the Best 32

Peter Black, quite rightly, says that the new revelations in today's Guardian about News of the World journalists and phone hacking pose serious questions for the Metropolitan Police. Given Andy Coulson's place at David Cameron's right hand, they also pose serious questions for the Conservative Party. Rest assured: it may not all be brushed under the carpet, as a white knight has appeared to fight for truth. His name? Lembit Opik. Then again...

A while ago I wrote about Paul Heaton and his Pedals and Pumps cycle tour. Now John Leech MP (as in Lib Dem MP for Manchester Withington) has raised the issue that Heaton is seeking to publicise - the decline of British pubs - in a Commons early day motion. John describes Paul Heaton as "the former Beautiful South front man".

Rosie Sharpley, the Lib Dem candidate in Woking, has some warm memories of Sir Alec Bedser, who died yesterday: "I first met Alec Bedser when I was Mayor. He was a great supporter of Woking College and we had regular chats when he and his brother attended Woking Community Hospital. He always had time to chat about Woking and ‘current issues’ and was kindly and appreciative of others around him."

Whatever happened to The Jury Team? asks The Snow in Summer of So-So.

English Buildings, quite possibly my favourite blog of all, discovers Dinton Castle - a ruinous 18th century folly in Buckinghamshire.

Remember Constance McMillen? She was the brave teenager who insisted on attending a high school prom with her lesbian partner. The latest news from Lezget Real is that "the school district attorney invited Constance and all the other students to a prom at the country club in Fulton, on Friday April 2nd. Because of the low turn out and from sources in the area, LGR has found out that there was a “real prom” held for the school’s straight, popular students. The rumor is that school officials were directly involved in this ruse."

Incidentally, am I the only person who dislikes the recent importation of the American high school prom? Probably. I mean, I am getting old. I still think of Paul Heaton as the former Housemartins front man.

Take it away boys...
